I've always known I was going to be a teacher "when I grew up." I don't know where this knowledge came from or how it became rooted in my heart with such certainty, but I've never had the slightest thought of pursuing anything different. Tomorrow marks a momentous step in my journey as I officially start my student teaching semester. I will be working at a local middle school and teaching two classes of algebra 1 and four classes of pre-algebra.
Right now I am full of excitement mixed with a big douse of nervousness and feeling inadequate. Even though I've worked diligently towards it for so long, I can't believe that this semester and experience is actually here. I know I'm prepared and ready...I just don't feel old enough to be a teacher!
I decided on a whim to start a blog during student teaching. I had considered it, but was unsure I'd have the time or energy to keep it up. I learned that my favorite math blogger, mathequalslove.blogspot.com, had started her blog during her student teaching and that encouraged me to do the same.
The title "My Math Teaching Toolbox" comes from my 8th grade math class with Mr. Fouch. He frequently referenced the notion of a toolbox where we could place different mathematical ideas, functions and skills in one place and later find the appropriate tool to use in a specific problem. I benefit so much from self-reflection, so I figured this blog could serve as my "toolbox" and house my mistakes, goals, reflections and journey towards being the best math teacher I can be!
